Sterling Silver, also known as 925, consists of 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining 7.5% made up of an alloy. This combination is necessary because pure silver is too soft for use in jewellery. It is combined with an alloy (usually copper) to make it stronger for use in jewellery designs.
